ion42 is the project-based consortium of the architecture firms schneider+schumacher in Frankfurt and DGI Bauwerk in Berlin. It was formed in the context of the FAIR major project in Darmstadt. In coordination with its users and the international research community, the GSI Helmholtz Centre is planning this new accelerator center FAIR for research with ion and antiproton beams. ion42 GbR is responsible for the architecture in both the narrow and the broader sense. The project is currently in the implementation phase. The logo combines playfulness with a wink: the offset dot on the i visualizes the accelerated ion, making it a versatile design code. The 42 in the name alludes to the answer to every question in the universe in "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", because that answer is "42". When a physicist and an architect meet ...
