Wayfinding & Signage SystemsDesign for better orientation
Well-functioning, intuitive wayfinding systems are essential, whether in museums, corporate campuses, hospitals or airports. A signage system must respond to local conditions and architecture while meeting the needs of its target audience. Language, color and iconography are the tools we use to create clear communication in space and guide people safely and understandably.
Wayfinding system design
User-friendliness and the visualization of complex content are at the center of the conception and implementation of wayfinding and orientation systems.
The round table
Even the design and execution planning of buildings is a complex process. When developing the corresponding wayfinding or orientation system, all later processes within the building must be considered. Our advice: plan the orientation system from the beginning and involve all stakeholders early.
Experiencing and exploring spaces
At the beginning of developing an orientation system is the exploration and experience of the space. Based on use cases, we define future content, determine touchpoints and create information clusters. The goal is to offer as few pieces of information as possible, allowing users to find their way easily, clearly and unambiguously. This first step forms the basis for the later creation of all information carriers. After all, every arrow should point in the right direction.

Simplicity in the wayfinding system
Clear design that enables information to be absorbed quickly is essential when designing a wayfinding system. We pay close attention to highly legible typefaces. Especially in multilingual systems, good distinguishability between languages must also be ensured.

Image vs. text
Pictograms are used whenever communication needs to work especially quickly and internationally. Images are processed fastest by our brain. Symbols for restrooms or arrivals and departures are familiar classics, but in more complex contexts images alone reach their limits without supporting text.

Colorful, not cluttered
Colors help structure information and are coded with functions: red warns, green helps, yellow guides. But be careful: these associations are also subject to cultural norms. Sufficient contrast is always important. In some cases, the needs of groups such as people with red-green color weakness must be taken into special account.
Materiality for orientation systems
Alongside design, the material of the information carriers also plays an important role in emphasizing or minimizing their object character. The planned lifespan of the wayfinding system and the budget influence which materials are used. In addition to aesthetic considerations, we always ask: How expandable and updateable does the system need to be? Which environmental influences and safety regulations must be considered? How can vandalism be limited? Through our experience and with the help of our network of skilled production partners, we find appropriate answers to these questions and provide material samples and dummies.
